“They drank and they knew (some) things…”

The Guernsey media did a good job of emulating the now infamous ‘I drink and I know things’ quote from Game of Thrones at the annual Orchard Media Quiz which took place on 2 May at the Peninsula Hotel.

In light of the worldwide phenomenon ‘Game of Thrones’ airing its last ever series at the moment we felt it was timely that this year’s media quiz took on this theme –  and the local media were very much on board with it! Eight teams from across the local media took part and we had some fantastic GOT-themed team names including the BBC Guernsey team ‘QuizMaesters  – Arya ready for this’, the Guernsey Press team ‘Release the Press Hounds – Arya Perchoine’ and the Island FM ‘Hodorks’.

The media’s knowledge was tested over six rounds including politics, science, entertainment and sport (all with a few added GOT-themed questions) and a picture round featuring 15 questions about dragons. There was also a creative round over dinner when teams had to design their own team crest and motto.

It was a closely fought competition with just a point between the first and second-placed teams (both from BBC Guernsey to add to the tension!) but the ‘Is the Kettle on?’ team were victorious with 70 points.

Orchard has hosted a media quiz in Guernsey for more than 10 years and in that time hundreds of local journalists have battled against each other to win the coveted Orchard Media Quiz trophy. Although team Orchard liaise with the local media on behalf of our clients on a daily basis this annual event is an important opportunity to spend valuable face-to-face time with some of our key media contacts in the island and get to know them away from the pressures of deadlines and the constantly evolving news agenda.

It’s so important in an increasingly digital (and busy) working world that we take the time to build meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships – it’s what PR is about after all! It’s also a great opportunity for them to network, catch up with their colleagues and most importantly for us all to have some fun!

“When you play a game of thrones you win or you die” – I have to say our quiz was slightly less dramatic…but only slightly. The media do take it rather seriously…
